The City of Saintes

The city, which is about 30 kms from Cozes, was established by the
Romans in 20BC and named Mediolanum Santonum after a local tribe.
Of the surviving Roman features, the most extensive is its amphitheatre.
The city has three museums
.

In the distance above is the church of St Eutropius, Bishop of Saintes
who was martyred in the 3rd century.

Saintes stands on the banks of the Charente river, which is canalised,
through to Rochefort, but abandoned. It is being restored for pleasure.

The Triumphal Arch of Germanicus formerly stood at the end of the
Roman bridge, which was destroyed when the river was canalised.
